Crop circles
Two Englishmen in a pub decided in 1978 to make a flying saucer landing site with a plank and a rope. Thirteen years later they demonstrated the method to journalists. Crop circles are now commissioned as advertising.
Why this verdict
Debunked by confession and demonstration: two men admitted making the originals in 1991, and circle-making has since become an open art form with named practitioners, commissions and documented technique.

01The claim
That geometric formations appearing overnight in cereal crops are made by extraterrestrial craft, plasma vortices or unknown energies, evidenced by bent rather than broken stems, node elongation, and the impossibility of producing such complex geometry in darkness.
02Where it came from
Doug Bower and Dave Chorley began in 1978 near Winchester, using a plank on a rope and a baseball cap sight line for straight runs. Circles multiplied through the 1980s, mostly in Wiltshire and Hampshire, and 'cereology' emerged as a research field with journals and conferences. In September 1991 Bower and Chorley told Today newspaper what they had been doing and made a circle under observation. A leading cereologist, invited to assess it without knowing the provenance, pronounced it authentic.

After the confession, the phenomenon did not stop — it professionalised. Groups including the Circlemakers have worked openly since the 1990s, taking commercial commissions from brands and broadcasters, and have made formations of extreme geometric complexity in a single night under camera. The technique is documented: stalk-stompers, measuring tape, a survey plan worked out in advance. The 2001 Milk Hill formation, 409 circles across roughly 240 metres, is elaborate; it is also exactly what a team with a plan and eight hours can produce.
The physical markers offered as evidence have ordinary explanations. Bent, unbroken stems occur because cereal stems are flexible when young and because pressure at the base bends rather than snaps them. Node elongation is a normal phototropic and gravitropic growth response in flattened plants, and appears in crops flattened by wind and rain. Claims of anomalous radiation and magnetic particles have not replicated under controlled sampling.
The distribution is the tell. Formations cluster overwhelmingly in southern England, near roads, in fields visible from a vantage point, in the summer months when nights are short and the crop is at the right stage. That is the distribution of an art practice, not of an atmospheric phenomenon.
04What it cost
Farmers bear the cost — a formation destroys sellable crop and attracts trespass. Beyond that the episode is a clean case study in expert overconfidence: cereologists had developed diagnostic criteria for distinguishing 'genuine' formations from hoaxes, and those criteria confidently authenticated a circle made to order by the men who invented the whole thing.
