The Moon landing hoax
The claim that Apollo was staged has been answered by evidence that does not depend on trusting NASA: lasers bounced off mirrors left on the Moon, rock samples that cannot be made on Earth, and photographs of the hardware taken by other countries' spacecraft.

01The claim
That the six Apollo crewed landings between 1969 and 1972 were filmed on Earth, motivated by the need to beat the Soviet Union and by the belief that the Van Allen radiation belts and the technology of the era made the mission impossible. Supporting arguments cite the absence of stars in photographs, the waving flag, non-parallel shadows, and the lack of a blast crater beneath the lunar module.
02Where it came from
The claim was assembled by Bill Kaysing, a former technical writer at Rocketdyne, in a self-published 1976 pamphlet, We Never Went to the Moon. It found its audience in the post-Watergate, post-Vietnam moment when official accounts had already been shown to be unreliable — which is the real engine here. A 1978 film, Capricorn One, dramatised a faked Mars mission and cemented the plausibility. A 2001 Fox television special gave it a mass audience, and a durable misreading of Stanley Kubrick's 2001 supplied a director.

The strongest evidence is the kind the alleged conspirators could not control.
The Apollo 11, 14 and 15 crews left retroreflector arrays on the surface. Observatories in France, Italy, Germany and the United States have fired lasers at those specific coordinates continuously since 1969 and receive returns with a timing precision that has measured the Moon's recession from Earth at 3.8 centimetres a year. The arrays are at the documented landing sites and nowhere else.
Apollo returned 382 kilograms of rock and soil, distributed to laboratories in dozens of countries including, during the Cold War, the Soviet Union. The samples are unweathered by water, contain agglutinates formed by micrometeorite impact in vacuum, and carry solar-wind-implanted noble gases and cosmic-ray exposure ages of hundreds of millions of years. No terrestrial or synthetic process produces this combination.
Orbiters have since photographed the sites. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has imaged the descent stages, the experiment packages and the astronauts' tracks at all six locations. India's Chandrayaan-2 and Japan's SELENE returned independent data consistent with the landings. The Soviet Union tracked Apollo in real time, had every incentive to expose a fake, and never made the claim.
The familiar photographic objections all have ordinary answers. Stars are absent because the exposures were set for a brightly sunlit surface. The flag has a horizontal rod along its top and moves only when handled. Shadows diverge because the surface is uneven and the images are wide-angle. The descent engine was throttled far down and operating in a vacuum, where the exhaust plume expands rather than digging.
04What it cost
Surveys have found belief hovering around 5–10% in the United States and higher in some countries where it functions as a general statement about American credibility. Buzz Aldrin punched a man who confronted him about it in 2002 and was not charged. The more serious cost is structural: Apollo is the standard example used to argue that any large technical achievement could be fabricated, a template subsequently applied to climate data, vaccine trials and election results.
