Red mercury
A substance said to allow briefcase-sized nuclear weapons, traded on black markets since the late 1980s at millions of dollars a kilogram. It does not exist. The trade in it is real, and has been used as bait by security services.
Why this verdict
Debunked as a substance: no compound with the claimed properties exists, nuclear weapons physicists and the IAEA have said so repeatedly, and every seizure has proved to be ordinary material sold in a fraud.

01The claim
That a material known as red mercury — variously described as mercury antimony oxide, a Soviet ballotechnic compound, or something produced by irradiating mercury in a reactor — can compress a fusion fuel sufficiently to build a nuclear weapon without a fission trigger, enabling a warhead small enough to carry; and that governments deny its existence to keep it out of circulation.
02Where it came from
References appear in Soviet and then Russian press in the late 1980s and early 1990s, in the general disorder around the collapse of the Soviet nuclear complex, when the fear of loose material was well founded and the market for it was real. Samuel Cohen, the American physicist associated with the neutron bomb, promoted the claim in the 1990s, which gave it a credentialed voice. From there it circulated through arms-trafficking rumour, and later acquired a second life in the Middle East, where it was said to be found in old sewing machines and to attract jinn.
03What the record shows
✕ DEBUNKED — Investigated and refuted. Here is what actually happened.
The physics does not work. A thermonuclear secondary requires compression by X-rays from a fission primary; no chemical explosive, however energetic, delivers energy densities within orders of magnitude of what is needed. The specific compound most often named, mercury(II) antimony oxide, is a real and unremarkable material with none of the claimed properties. There is no theoretical route to the effect described, which is why the claim is rejected not only by governments but by weapons designers with no institutional interest in the answer.
The empirical record is equally consistent. Samples seized in Europe, Africa and Asia and submitted for analysis have been mercury with red dye, mercuric iodide, red mercuric oxide, powdered brick, or nothing of note. The International Atomic Energy Agency has stated there is no evidence any such material exists. Investigations in the 1990s traced several of the largest offers to organised fraud rather than to proliferation.
The genuinely interesting element is operational: because credulous buyers were reliably attracted, security services in several countries used red mercury offers as bait in stings, which had the side effect of confirming to the market that governments were interested in it. A non-existent substance thereby acquired official-looking corroboration.
04What it cost
The fraud has cost buyers substantial sums and has, on several occasions, cost lives — sellers and buyers in unregulated markets do not resolve disputes in court. In 2015 reporting from Iraq and the Gulf documented people dismantling old machinery and telephones in search of it, with injuries from mercury exposure. The security consequence is subtler and worse: a decade of chasing a substance that does not exist absorbed attention and credibility that the real problem of loose fissile material required, which is the specific way a hoax can damage a genuine effort.
