9/11 controlled demolition
The towers fell because fire weakened steel that was already carrying loads redistributed by the impacts. The specific claims — molten steel, free-fall, symmetrical collapse, thermite — have each been examined by structural engineers and answered. The unanswered questions about 11 September 2001 are political, not structural.
Why this verdict
Debunked by a seven-year federal engineering investigation that reproduced each collapse from the physical evidence, and by the absence of any demolition signature — no shaped-charge acoustics, no pre-cut columns, no explosive residue in the debris.

01The claim
That the twin towers and 7 World Trade Center were brought down by pre-planted explosives rather than by aircraft impact and fire, and that the attacks were therefore permitted or orchestrated by elements of the US government as a pretext for war. Supporting arguments cite the near-free-fall descent of WTC 7, the symmetry of the collapses, reports of molten metal in the debris, and the absence of a comparable prior steel high-rise collapse from fire.
02Where it came from
The claim emerged within weeks, initially in French author Thierry Meyssan's L'Effroyable Imposture and on early web forums, and reached mass distribution through the 2005 internet film Loose Change. It coincided with a real and justified collapse in trust: the Iraq war was launched on intelligence claims that proved false, which made the broader premise — that the government would manufacture a pretext — feel demonstrated. Operation Northwoods, genuine and declassified, was and remains the argument's cornerstone.
03What the record shows
✕ DEBUNKED — Investigated and refuted. Here is what actually happened.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology conducted a seven-year investigation with over 200 technical staff, producing some 10,000 pages. Its findings address each claim specifically.
On the towers: the aircraft severed perimeter columns and stripped fireproofing from the floor trusses over multiple storeys. Jet fuel burned off within minutes; the sustained fire was the building's own contents. Structural steel does not need to melt to fail — it loses roughly half its strength by 600 °C, well within office-fire temperatures. Sagging floor trusses pulled the perimeter columns inward, which is visible in photographs taken before each collapse, and once a storey failed the mass above exceeded what the intact structure below could arrest.
On WTC 7, which was not struck by an aircraft: NIST's 2008 report identified thermal expansion of floor beams under uncontrolled fires, fed by the building's own diesel and contents and unfought because the water mains were severed, which pushed a girder off its seat at column 79 and initiated a progressive interior collapse. NIST acknowledged a period of approximately 2.25 seconds of free-fall acceleration during the exterior descent, after the interior had already failed — a detail often quoted as a concession and rarely quoted with its second half.
Against demolition specifically: controlled demolition requires weeks of preparation, stripping walls to place charges on columns, and produces a characteristic sequence of loud explosive reports audible on every recording. No such reports appear in the extensive audio record. Thermite is an incendiary, not a cutting charge suitable for a structure of this scale, and the 'nano-thermite' paper offered as evidence was published in a journal whose editor resigned over its acceptance. Fire-induced collapses of steel structures have occurred elsewhere, including the Plasco building in Tehran in 2017 and the Windsor Tower in Madrid in 2005.
The real failures of 11 September are documented in the 9/11 Commission report and are institutional: the CIA did not tell the FBI what it knew about two hijackers inside the United States, warnings were not acted on, and 28 pages concerning Saudi connections were classified for thirteen years before release. Those are the questions with evidence attached.
04What it cost
The truth movement absorbed a decade of political energy that might have gone to the documented failures, and it supplied the template — 'false flag' — now applied within hours to every mass-casualty event, including school shootings. Its most lasting effect is that the phrase 'inside job' is now available for events where no comparable evidence has ever existed.
