5G and COVID-19
A claim that 5G networks caused or spread COVID-19 circulated in early 2020 and led to more than a hundred arson attacks on telecommunications masts in Europe. Several of the burned masts were not 5G. One was serving a hospital.
Why this verdict
Debunked on basic physics and epidemiology: radio waves cannot create or transmit a virus, and the disease spread rapidly through countries and regions with no 5G infrastructure at all.

01The claim
That fifth-generation mobile networks either suppress the immune system, making people susceptible to the virus, or directly cause the symptoms attributed to COVID-19 — and that the pandemic was declared to conceal the rollout's effects or to justify lockdowns during installation.
02Where it came from
The claim assembled in January 2020 from two existing streams: long-standing anti-electromagnetic-field activism, and a Belgian newspaper interview in which a general practitioner speculated about a link between 5G masts near Wuhan and the outbreak. The article was retracted within hours; it had already been screenshotted. Facebook groups amalgamated it with older material, and celebrity amplification in the United Kingdom in early April 2020 gave it national reach at the exact moment lockdown began.

The physics is not close. 5G operates between roughly 600 MHz and 40 GHz. Photons at these frequencies carry energies around a million times below the threshold needed to break a chemical bond — the definition of non-ionising radiation. They cannot alter DNA, cannot damage cell membranes at permitted power levels, and cannot manufacture a self-replicating biological particle from nothing. SARS-CoV-2 was isolated, sequenced, cultured and imaged by laboratories in dozens of countries within weeks of the outbreak; it is an object, not a symptom pattern.
The epidemiology is equally direct. Iran had one of the earliest and most severe outbreaks and had no 5G network. Japan and South Korea had extensive 5G and comparatively contained early outbreaks. Within the United Kingdom, COVID incidence showed no relationship to mast locations. The virus reached Antarctic research stations and remote Amazonian communities with no cellular infrastructure of any generation.
The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection updated its exposure guidelines in 2020 after reviewing the accumulated research and found no established adverse health effects below the limits, which are set with a large safety margin and are far above real-world exposure from masts.
04What it cost
By May 2020 more than 90 masts had been damaged or destroyed in the United Kingdom and at least 30 in the Netherlands, with attacks also in Belgium, Ireland, Cyprus and New Zealand. Telecoms engineers were threatened and assaulted; some were spat at during a respiratory pandemic. A mast serving Nightingale Hospital Birmingham was set on fire. Several destroyed masts carried only 3G and 4G equipment, cutting emergency communications in the affected areas. It is the clearest recent case of an online claim converting directly into physical destruction within weeks.
