The Younger Dryas impact hypothesis
A proposal that a comet struck the northern hemisphere 12,900 years ago, ending the Clovis culture. The key evidence has not replicated. The claim that archaeology suppresses it is refuted by the literature arguing about it.
Why this verdict
Debunked as a suppression claim — the hypothesis has been published, funded, tested and argued over in the open for nearly two decades — while the underlying scientific proposal remains a live minority position that has repeatedly failed independent replication.

01The claim
That an extraterrestrial impact or airburst around 12,900 years ago triggered the Younger Dryas cold period, caused the extinction of North American megafauna and ended the Clovis archaeological culture — and, in the popular version, that mainstream archaeology suppresses the evidence because it would require an advanced pre-Clovis civilisation to be written into prehistory.
The scientific hypothesis and the suppression claim are different propositions, and this entry judges the second.
02Where it came from
The hypothesis was proposed in a 2007 paper by Richard Firestone and colleagues, citing a layer known as the black mat and reporting markers said to indicate impact: nanodiamonds, magnetic microspherules, iridium and carbon spherules. It was published in a major journal and received serious attention. Its popular career diverged from its scientific one after Graham Hancock adopted it in Magicians of the Gods and later in a Netflix series, where the failure of archaeologists to accept it became evidence of institutional gatekeeping.
03What the record shows

On the science, the record is one of failed replication rather than of neglect. Independent groups attempting to reproduce the impact markers have generally not found them, or have found that the materials identified as nanodiamonds were graphene and graphane aggregates, or ordinary carbon. Microspherules of the type described occur from volcanic and industrial sources and from ordinary sedimentary processes. Attempts to reproduce the stratigraphic dating found that the sampled layers were not contemporaneous across sites. Reviews by Nicholas Pinter, Vance Holliday, Todd Surovell and others have set out these failures in detail; the proponents have responded in print, and the exchange continues.
That exchange is the refutation of the suppression claim. The hypothesis has appeared in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in Journal of Geology, in Science Advances; it has attracted funding, conference sessions and doctoral work. A discipline suppressing an idea does not spend eighteen years publishing both sides of it.
The popular version adds a claim the scientific one never made — that the impact destroyed an advanced global civilisation whose survivors seeded later cultures. That claim has no evidential basis at all, and it carries the standard problem of the genre: the civilisations whose achievements it reassigns are almost always non-European ones.
A reasonable person can hold that the impact hypothesis deserves more testing. That is a scientific minority position and it is not what this entry marks debunked.
04What it cost
The suppression frame has had a measurable effect on public understanding of archaeology as a discipline, and archaeologists have spent considerable effort responding to a television series rather than to a paper. The Society for American Archaeology took the unusual step of writing publicly to a streaming service about the framing. The more durable cost is the one this archive keeps encountering: a genuine open question gets harder to fund and discuss on its merits once it has become the property of a claim about hidden knowledge.
