Hollow Earth
The idea that the Earth contains a habitable interior reached by polar openings was a respectable hypothesis in 1692 and an expedition proposal in 1818. Seismic tomography settled it. We have, in effect, an X-ray of the planet.
Why this verdict
Debunked by seismology: earthquake waves travel through the planet's interior in patterns that map its layers directly, and those patterns are incompatible with a cavity.

01The claim
That the Earth is hollow or contains vast habitable cavities, accessible through openings at the poles, inhabited by an advanced civilisation, and that governments conceal this by restricting polar overflight and doctoring satellite imagery.
02Where it came from
Edmond Halley proposed a hollow Earth of concentric shells in 1692 as a serious explanation for anomalies in compass readings — a reasonable hypothesis given seventeenth-century evidence. In 1818 John Cleves Symmes Jr. campaigned for an expedition to the polar openings and gathered enough support that Congress debated funding it. The occult layer arrived in the nineteenth century with the subterranean kingdom of Agartha, and the modern version added Admiral Richard Byrd, whose 1947 Antarctic expedition Operation Highjump is offered as a cover for contact with an inner-Earth civilisation, on the basis of a diary that first appeared in print in the 1990s and is not in the Byrd Polar Archives.
03What the record shows

The interior is not inferred; it is measured. Every large earthquake sends pressure waves and shear waves through the planet, and seismometer networks worldwide record their arrival times. Shear waves cannot pass through liquid, and the resulting shadow zone defines the liquid outer core precisely. Refraction at each boundary reveals depth and density. From tens of thousands of events, seismic tomography reconstructs the interior in three dimensions: crust, mantle, liquid outer core, solid inner core. A large cavity would produce unmistakable arrival anomalies at every station on Earth. None exist.
The planet's mass, derived from orbital mechanics and confirmed by satellite gravimetry, gives a mean density of about 5.51 grams per cubic centimetre — roughly twice that of surface rock. The Earth is denser inside, not emptier. The magnetic field is generated by convection in the liquid iron outer core, a mechanism that requires the core to be there.
As for polar concealment: the poles are photographed constantly by weather and Earth-observation satellites from multiple countries, crossed by commercial polar routes, and traversed on foot by expeditions carrying GPS. Byrd's own flight logs and the Highjump records are archived and describe a mapping and training operation.
04What it cost
Largely inert today, hollow Earth persists as a component of larger belief systems and as an example of how a discarded scientific hypothesis becomes folklore. Its history is a useful corrective: Halley was doing science, not conspiracy. The claim only became a conspiracy theory once the answer was known and the concealment had to be invented to sustain it.
