The phantom time hypothesis
A German writer proposed in 1991 that the years 614 to 911 were fabricated and never happened. Tree rings, eclipse records from three civilisations and Halley's Comet all disagree.

Debunked by independent dating methods that do not depend on European records at all: dendrochronology, radiocarbon calibration, and Chinese and Islamic astronomical observations that align exactly with the conventional chronology.

01The claim
That roughly 297 years of the early medieval period were invented, that Charlemagne is a fictional composite, and that the fabrication was arranged around the year 1000 by Otto III, Pope Sylvester II and Constantine VII to place themselves at a symbolically significant date.
02Where it came from
Heribert Illig, a German publisher and writer, set out the hypothesis in 1991. His arguments were the scarcity of archaeological material from parts of the period, the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582 correcting fewer days than he calculated it should have, and the perceived stylistic continuity of Romanesque architecture across the supposed gap.
03What the record shows
✕ DEBUNKED — Investigated and refuted. Here is what actually happened.
The calendar argument is arithmetically wrong. The 1582 reform was designed to restore the equinox to its position at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, not to the introduction of the Julian calendar in 45 BC. The drift from 325 to 1582 is about ten days, which is exactly what was corrected. Illig's discrepancy is created by choosing the wrong reference date.
Dendrochronology provides a continuous, year-by-year record from living trees back through overlapping timbers to before 6000 BC in central Europe and Ireland. The sequence has no gap and no room for one; timbers from buildings dated by documents to the supposedly fictitious period ring-date to exactly those years. Radiocarbon dating is calibrated against that tree-ring record and agrees.
Astronomy is decisive because it is independent of any European authority. Chinese, Islamic and Byzantine observers separately recorded solar eclipses, comets and planetary conjunctions across the period, with dates and locations. Modern computation of eclipse tracks matches those records to the day. Halley's Comet returns roughly every 76 years and its recorded appearances — including 684, 760, 837 and 912 in Chinese and European sources — form an unbroken chain with no missing returns. Removing three centuries would require every one of these civilisations to have conspired, including several that had no contact with the alleged conspirators.
The archaeological argument also fails on its own terms: excavation across Europe, including at Byzantine, Umayyad and Carolingian sites, has produced abundant stratified material from the period, and Islamic coinage from those years is dated and plentiful.
04What it cost
Almost none, which is the point of including it. Phantom time is the archive's cleanest example of a hypothesis that is not politically motivated, hurts no one, and is nevertheless refuted by five independent lines of evidence — a useful control case for what refutation looks like when nothing is at stake and nobody is defending a position.
